School History

The first class graduated from Crockett Colored High School in 1916. The school played a vital role in the black community, focusing on education, as well as non-educational activities. Many of the school’s achievements and progress were accomplished under the leadership of Professor W.M. Henry, former teacher, and principal. Mrs. Willie Mae Cary was very instrumental in getting the school name changed to Ralph J. Bunche. During her studies at New York State University, Mrs. Cary met the black Nobel Peace prize winner, Dr. Ralph J. Bunche. She was impressed by him and began to lobby for the school name change from Crockett Colored to Ralph J. Bunche. Her efforts became a reality in 1952, when the school’s name was formally changed under the leadership of W. M. Batts, who served for many years as principal, and later Selmus Curtis, as the last school principal for Ralph J. Bunche.
